Start with what they already wear

The best predictor of whether a gift will be worn is what the person wears today. Before you shop, spend a week noticing. Do they wear yellow, white or rose gold, or a mix? Do they wear the same few pieces every day or change jewelry with their clothes? Are their pieces small and close to the body, or larger and more noticeable?

If they wear almost no jewelry, start small. A pair of studs or a fine chain is easy to wear without changing habits. If they already have a full collection, look for a gap rather than a duplicate: a bracelet for someone who wears only necklaces, or a pendant for someone who wears chains without one.

  • Metal color: match what they wear most, or choose yellow gold, which pairs easily with others.
  • Scale: if their pieces are fine and minimal, a heavy statement piece may stay in the box.
  • Lifestyle: someone who works with their hands may prefer earrings or a necklace to a ring.
  • Piercings: check whether their ears are pierced, and how many holes they wear.

Choose pieces that forgive an unknown size

Rings are the hardest gift to get right without help, because fit matters so much. If you cannot find out a ring size discreetly, choose another category. Earrings fit everyone with pierced ears. Necklaces only need a length, and 18 inches suits most adults. Bracelets need a rough wrist size, but chains with an adjustable clasp give some room.

If you have your heart set on a ring, borrow one the person already wears on the same finger and measure its inside diameter, or ask a close friend or family member to help. Our ring size guide explains how to convert that measurement into a US size.

Add something personal

A gift becomes meaningful through a detail that could only belong to that person. Engraving is the most direct way: initials, a date, a place or a short phrase on the back of a pendant or inside a band. Keep engravings short. On a small medallion, four to eight characters are usually easier to read than a full sentence.

Stones can carry meaning too. Birthstones, a stone that marks an anniversary year, or a color that matches a memory all work. A pearl for a 30th anniversary or a sapphire for September are examples. Meaning can also come from the moment: a piece given at a graduation, a new job or a birth will be remembered for that day.

Keep in mind that engraved and made-to-order pieces are usually final sale, so confirm spelling and dates twice before you order.

Set a budget you are comfortable with

Fine jewelry does not need to be expensive to be well made. Solid gold pieces under $500 can be worn every day for years. Set a budget before you shop so the choice becomes about the person, not the price tag.

At VÉRA, some of the pieces most often chosen as gifts sit under $500: the Thread Stacking Ring in 14k at $290, the Fil Chain Bracelet in 14k at $340, the Pebble Studs in 18k at $380 and the Fil Chain Necklace in 14k at $420. The engravable Medallion Necklace in 14k is $680.

Plan for timing

Leave more time than you think you need. Ready-to-wear pieces usually ship within 1 to 2 business days. Made-to-order pieces take 3 to 5 weeks because they are made after you order. Bespoke commissions take 6 to 10 weeks after the design is approved.

For birthdays and holidays, order ready-to-wear pieces at least a week ahead and choose express shipping if you are close to the date. Orders over $500 need a signature on delivery, so ship to an address where someone will be home, or to an office.

Presentation and the message

How a gift arrives is part of the gift. Every VÉRA piece comes in a recycled-card box with a cotton pouch and a care card, so there is nothing extra to buy. You can add a gift message at checkout at no charge. Write it as you would a card: a line about why you chose this piece says more than a general greeting.

If you ship directly to the recipient, let them know a parcel is coming if it needs a signature.

If it is not quite right

Even a carefully chosen gift sometimes needs to change. Unworn ready-to-wear pieces in their original packaging can be returned or exchanged within 30 days of delivery, with a free return label in the US. Eligible rings, meaning plain bands and solitaires, include one free resize within 60 days.

Tell the recipient that exchanges are possible. People often keep a gift that does not quite suit them out of politeness, and the point is for the piece to be worn.
